The Roles of Assistant Teachers in Early Childhood Education Classrooms

We are currently investigating the unique contributions assistant teachers, as a traditionally overlooked subset of the teaching staff, make to the daily implementation of the Head Start program in pre-kindergarten (pre-K) classes that enroll dual language learning (DLL) children. Though both lead and assistant teachers interact daily with children in their Head Start classrooms, most of the prior research has focused on the characteristics and contributions of the lead teacher. We aim to highlight how assistant teachers make a difference in the early education experience of Head Start children—and particularly for those children who are also DLLs.
